Koka Hydropower Reservoir is located in northern Ethiopia in Africa. The dam was built at the end of the 1950's. The sediment concentration in the inflowing water is high, and over the years the volume of the reservoir has decreased. In 1980, a bathymetrical survey was conducted in the reservoir, enabling an assessment of the sedimentation. This was repeated in 1999. Together with the original topographical map of the reservoir area, these three surfaces provide information about the amount of sediment deposits and the distribution in the reservoir.
The goal of the present projet is to use a 3D numerical model to predict the sedimentation in the reservoir, and compare this with the measurements.

Coarse grid of the reservoir, where the colours show the bed elevation. The figure is strongly distorted in the vertical direction.
This project was started by Mr. Michael Abebe Haile as a part of his MSc thesis.
